It wasn’t much of a game — the BCS title was all but wrapped up by halftime. Alabama Crimson Tide swamped top-ranked Notre Dame 42-14 to win their second straight championship. Running back Eddy Lacy and quarterback AJ McCarron led the Crimson Tide attack.

Katherine Webb YouTubeWith the game itself turning out to be a laugher, fans and media turned their attention elsewhere. Since Monday night’s game there has been an avalanche of reaction to comments by the ESPN broadcast team Brent Musburger and Kirk Herbstreit.

Musburger is taking the most heat for exclaiming “what a beautiful woman” when McCarron’s girlfriend, Katherine Webb, appeared on the screen. Critics have called the veteran sportscaster “creepy,” “horny” and worse.

The furor even prompted ESPN to issue an apology via Twitter.

“We always try to capture interesting storylines and the relationship between an Auburn grad who is Miss Alabama and the current Alabama quarterback certainly met that test. However, we apologize that the commentary in this instance went too far and Brent understands that.” — ESPN’s Mike Soltys

Webb, who gained more than a 100,000 Twitter followers following the incident, didn’t seem to mind Murburger’s comments at all.

“It was kind of nice. I didn’t look at it as creepy at all. For a woman to be called beautiful, I don’t see how that’s an issue.” — Katherine Webb

Webb’s mother Leslie spoke out about those who are criticizing her daughter and the beauty pageant saying, “”That’s actually what the Miss USA pageant did for Katherine is to help develop a better self-esteem to finally love herself. Her self confidence grew dramatically because of that.”
