Video: Soccer Player Handles a Grenade

Going to a playoff game at Joe Louis arena? Make sure that there’s room in your pants for an octopus. Scott Mellanby, the Canadiens Director of Player Personnel, is credited with initiating the “Rat Trick” tradition in Florida after the former Panther player killed a rat in the dressing room with his stick, and went on to score two goals in the game with the “weapon.”
But if you are at a soccer game in Iran, you just may witness a fellow spectator tossing a “grenade” onto the field.

Wednesday night’s AFC Champions League clash between Iranian side Sepahan and Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ahli produced no goals, but there was certainly some explosive action at the Foolad Shahr Stadium. The quarterfinal first leg was temporarily interrupted when the referee ran to one of the sidelines to inspect debris thrown on the field by fans. Sepahan midfielder Adel Kolahkaj picked up a small, black object and tossed it away from the pitch. Turns out that object was some kind of mini grenade or firecracker, which exploded upon landing, causing the referee and his assistant to run for their lives.
The player who discovered the explosive seemingly didn’t recognize the danger as he disposed of it rather casually.
