This September, more than 150 elite NHL players will feature at the World Cup of Hockey, a best-on-best tournament involving eight teams from North America and Europe. Toronto’s Air Canada Centre will host the action over two weeks as the likes of Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin, Patrick Kane and Henrik Lundqvist all hope to inspire their teams to eventual glory.

The games will come thick and fast, with the overall winners playing at least six times across one fortnight – this will be seven if the best-of-three final requires that deciding third game. It’s quite a way for the players involved to get some pre-season action under their belts prior to the resumption of the NHL in October. The World Cup tends to be dismissed as an afterthought in some quarters, but it’s still certain to grab the attention of hockey fans from mid-September right through to the end of the month.

Check out the infographic below, courtesy of Tucker Hockey , for an overview of the fixtures, the competing teams, where to watch the action and how this tournament has evolved since its Canada Cup days.

It’s been 12 years since the World Cup was last played. We can’t wait for the 2016 version to start!
